The Legion of Mary is an excellent organization for young,
Catholic,
single adults:
- Find a
spouse. One group of legionaries in Arlington,
Virginia reported 6 marriages from 2004-2005. About 1/2 that
group got married in less than 2 years!
- Make
friends. New to the Tidewater Virginia area?
Make some friends who share your faith and values.
- Serve
God. Let's face it, you're too old now for youth
group. You're too young for "bingo." The Legion of
Mary fits perfectly with your age group. You'll have meeting
with a set time once a week -- no longer than 1 1/2 hour, and a legion
work of 2 hours, once a week. A manageable amount of time,
and a chance to make a difference in the world.
- Learn
about your faith. Your done with school.
Maybe you enjoyed it, maybe you did not. You'll
miss learning none-the-less. Why not take some time and learn
about your Catholic Faith?
- Find
out your vocation. Are you thinking about
becoming a priest, a nun, or entering married life. Joining
the Legion of Mary is a great way to get a glimpse into each of these
vocations. Meet married Catholics, priests, and religious.
Learn about their lives.
- Overcome
shyness. Are you afraid to approach people
you've not met? Afraid to talk in public. Come into
the Legion of Mary. Our meetings are family-styled gatherings
in small groups. You'll soon feel at-ease speaking up with
people you've not met.
- Succeed
professionally. Much of what you learn in the
Legion of Mary you can use for all parts of your life. You'll
find that what you learn at Legion Meetings will make you a more
productive worker both for spiritual good and in your daily labor.
- Spend
time with mom. The closer we are to Mary, the
closer we are to Jesus. Spend some time learning about your
spiritual mother and praying with her.
- Learn
your way around town. If you are new to the
Tidewater, Virginia area, join the Legion of Mary and start to learn
where things are in town.
- Help
find the best parish for you. Sometimes if
you're new to an area it is hard to even find out where all the
parishes around are. Joining the Legion of Mary, may cut down
your Sunday commute in 1/2.

In summary, if you are young, Catholic, and single,
you may find that the Legion of Mary is right for you. This
is not to say that the Legion of Mary, however, is only for young,
Catholic singles. Here is a story about a junior member of
the Legion of Mary (juniors are those members under 18)
After Mass a junior member of the Legion of Mary was greeting people to
help recruit them to join the Legion of Mary. He came up to
one not-so-young man and asked him if he wanted to be an axuiliary
(praying) member of the Legion of Mary. The old man
asked, "Why can I not be an active member?" The young junior
replied, "because you are too old!" The old man, who was 80
years old at the time, replied back, "well, young man, my name is Frank
Duff."
Frank Duff, by-the-way, is the founder of the Legion of Mary.
He died at just over 90 years of age, as an active member of
the Legion of Mary.
